Respirometer

A respirometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the rate of respiration in living organisms by detecting the amount of oxygen consumed or carbon dioxide produced over a period of time. It is commonly used in biology and medical experiments to study metabolic activity in organisms such as plants, animals, or microorganisms.

The device works on the principle that during respiration, organisms take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. In many respirometers, the carbon dioxide produced is absorbed by a chemical substance like potassium hydroxide (KOH), causing a decrease in gas volume. This change in volume or pressure is then measured and used to determine the respiration rate.

Respirometers are widely used in laboratory experiments, educational demonstrations, and research studies to analyze how factors like temperature, activity level, or environmental conditions affect respiration.
